Ni Sa Bula!

(Nee Sa Mbula - Welcome!)

Ni Sa Bula and Welcome to Bula Books, a student organization through UW-Madison. Our organization was started in the Fall of 2006 by students returning from a semester Study Abroad in Fiji. The experiences we shared with the children, villages, schools, and people of Fiji amazed and inspired us. A few chance occurances led to the creation of this organization. Here you can learn more about us, about fiji, about our projects, and even help if you would like.

The Girls at the Mahaffy Home

The Mahaffy Home

10/15/2007

The first two boxes of books have arrived! Last week we shipped two boxes of books to Suva on our first trial run. They arrived on the 15th, and were taken over to the Mahaffy Girl's Home where the girls started reading immediately. We were very excited that the shipment was a success, and are planning on shipping another two boxes to Balenabelo Village soon. "On Tuesday I went to see my young ladies at Mahaffys and started reading with my reading partner. We started reading a book called the Desert. But she couldnt say desert. I was surprised, usually when she cant say something its because she is struggling to sound it out. So when I manage to explain what it is, she remembers the word for it, and then by looking at the word again she learns to spell it. But even when I explained the Desert, nothing but blank stares. She didnt know what a desert was. I tried to explain about where they are, and then went on about the desert in Australia which I though for sure she would be familiar with. No. Nothing. She wasnt even really curious, I think she just wanted me to get past the title and open the book...It had cardboard pages with holes in them that allowed you to see the animals on the next page. We learned about geckos, we learned about scorpions, about cacti, about hawks..." - From Robin, our contact at the Mahaffy Home.
